Our Mission:

CBS Harps was founded to promote community awareness of and appreciation for the folk harp in the Conception Bay South area and throughout the province of Newfoundland and Labrador.

Our mission,

  1. To increase public awareness of the music and joys of the folk harp

  2. To promote the playing and enjoyment of the folk harp by all,

is built on two main pillars of Inclusivity and Diversity.  It is based on a firm foundation of Nurture and Support and cultivated through strategies of Teaching and Mentorship which are fostered in Respect and Fellowship.

To succeed in our mission, CBS Harps has identified a number of strategic areas in which to direct its energies:

  1. The CBS Harp Circle

  2. Harp Tastings Course

  3. Community Outreach

  4. Workshops

  5. Concerts

  6. Membership

Our name denotes the name of the community, Conception Bay South, in which we are located.  This community is a 15 minute drive southwest of St. John's in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador.   The Irish Gaelic component of our name Talamh an Éisc was introduced when many Irish labourers were recruited to the island for the English migratory cod fishery in the early 16th and 17th centuries.  In fact, Newfoundland  became the only place outside Europe to have a distinct Irish-language name : Talamh an Éisc ("Land of the (One) Fish").
